The Lower East Side is a neighborhood in the southeastern part of New York City borough of Manhattan. Recently, it has undergone gentrification and is increasingly populated by young professionals, artists, and students. While the exact eastern and southern boundaries of the neighborhood are open to debate, the Lower East Side today refers to the area of Manhattan south of East Houston Street and west of the East River. The Lower East side is bordered in the south and west by Chinatown, the west by NoLita and in the north by the East Village. The Lower East Side is home to numerous art galleries, including BC No Rio, Gallery 128, the and the Asian American Arts Center. It has a funky mix of trendy boutiques, mom-and-pop shops, cozy cafes, and chic restaurants. This diverse neighborhood contains a great variety of houses of worship. For recreation, the East River Park stretches along the East River from Montgomery Street to 12th Street and has football, soccer and baseball fields, a full-size track, and an amphitheater, which is used for public performances. The Sara Roosevelt Park, located between Chrystie and Forsynth Streets, stretches from Canal Street to Houston Street and has several basketball courts, soccer fields and small community gardens. The Lower East Side is home to many live music venues.
