Greenwich Village is the large predominantly residential neighborhood in the northwestern proximity of downtown Manhattan and colloquially referred to as "The Village". Greenwich Village is the greater district encompassing the West Village, and is west of Noho and the East Village, South of Chelsea, and North of Soho. Greenwich Village is bordered by the larger thoroughfares of 14th Street on the north, Broadway on the East, West Houston Street on the South, and West Street and the Hudson River on the West. New York City’s Greenwich Village is named after Greenwich, London and was technically a village after designation in 1712.
With a rich and bohemian history fostering the Beat movement and many counter-culture movements in the 1960s as well as inspiring countless artists, musicians, and activists, Greenwich Village has often epitomized a certain image of New York City to the rest of the country as well as internationally. The neighborhood is anchored by multiple large universities, most notably New York University, as well as the New School and Parsons The New School for Design. Non-educational Greenwich Village institutions also include The Blue Note Jazz Club on West Third Street and Joe’s Pizza on Carmine Street.
With many architecturally significant townhomes and more generally characterized by a lower rise building stock than Midtown West, the streets of Greenwich Village tend to have a more bucolic residential atmosphere. One such desired sub-market is the “Gold Coast of Greenwich Village” or Lower Fifth Avenue, just before it terminates in Washington Square Park. Not to be confused with the Gold Coast Mansions of the North Shore of Long Island, Lower Fifth is one of the most beautiful uninterrupted stretches of quintessentially beautiful New York City pre-war residential co-op buildings.
