Williamsburg is known for being home to many young people moving to New York City. Furthermore, Williamsburg has a large hipster and local art community who came there for the low rents, large apartments, and proximity to Manhattan. Finally, Williamsburg has a strong cultural and ethnic diversity who came to Brooklyn from the Lower East Side after the opening of the Williamsburg Bridge in 1903. One avenue unites these different neigborhoods: Bedford Avenue. After 100 years, Williamsburg's population continues to grow at a fast rate. As a result, commercial and residential properties are available for sale, lease, and rent continue to develop. With the re-zoning that occurred in 2005, many warehouses converted to residential buildings. The eastern and southern sections of Williamsburg are more affordable but the prices of each section vary depending on access to green space and number of retail stores.

Williamsburg also boasts numerous historical landmarks. The Kings County Savings Institution is a New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission-designated building. Banks occupied the building until the 1990s when The Williamsburg Art and Historical Center began operating there. This French-style architecture was the seventh building in New York City to be landmarked. In addition, the Domino Sugar Refinery Building was designated a New York City landmark in 2007.
